
2011 PHR/SPHR Exam Eligibility Requirements
As of 2011, the new PHR/SPHR exam eligibility criteria became effective. There is one significant change made in the wording since the initial change announcement that I would like to bring to your attention. The wording around "experience." Originally there was a required of years "exempt level professional experience." It now reads "demonstrated professional experience."
Here are the eligibility requirements:
PHR
• 4 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with less than a Bachelor’s degree
• 2 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Bachelor’s degree
• 1 year of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Master’s degree or higher
SPHR
• 7 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with less than a Bachelor’s degree
• 5 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Bachelor’s degree
• 4 years of demonstrated professional HR experience with a Master’s degree or higher
NEXT STEPS
HRCI.org must approve your application prior to taking the test. This is an online application that also requires that you pay a testing fee. Once you are approved, you may schedule a time during the testing window to visit a testing center and sit for the exam.
FALL/WINTER 2012/2013 important dates
The testing window for Fall/Winter 2012 is: Dec 1, 2012- Jan 31, 2013
Online applications accepted through Oct 5, 2012.*
*(Late applications (additional fee) are accepted from Oct 6-Nov 9, 2012.)
It can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks to receive approval/denial so be sure to factor that in.
STUDYING FOR THE EXAM
There are lots of great option out there from self study, group study, to classroom style learning. The Close Group offers both a "live" classroom style learning experience as well as an online study course.
